Sustainability

We believe the land is our greatest asset. Using good sustainable practices to promote long-term agriculture is not only a good business practice, but it is also our responsibility to ensure a healthy planet for many generations to come.

Systems-Based Approach

We use a systems-based approach to land management following Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). Our sustainable growing practices include:

• Safe Working Environments
  From field to distribution, we believe that providing year-round safe working environments for our employees is an essential piece of creating a sustainable and responsible company.
• Water Conservation
  Effective water conservation is essential to sustaining the fertile growing conditions of the Central Valley. For much of the year, the San Joaquin Valley can be almost desert-like and irrigation is a necessity. By using a drip irrigation system to water our fields, we save enormous amounts of water – one of our most precious resources and one that is critical to our future.
• Recycling
  By using modern waste management practices and being adamant proponents of recycling, of all types of waste products – including undesirable or poor quality vegetables – of which none goes to landfills.
• Organic and GMO
  Although we are not an organic company, we respect the healthy lifestyle choices of all consumers and our goal, even as a conventional vegetable grower is to grow healthy products.  We do use pesticides, but work closely with agronomists to develop a farming plan that limits the total amount of pesticides used that will still allow us to grow healthy vegetables we are proud to feed our families and yours.
  
  As for GMO’s — it’s a no.  All of our vegetables are GMO free and naturally occurring hybrid varieties. In fact, our Sophia La Rosa sweet red onions are a hand harvested heirloom variety that has been in our family for generations.
• Investing in our future through Solar Power
  Energy conservation is a major focus for us, so we installed solar panels on the cold storage and packing house at our Fresno facility, which accounts for a majority of our energy consumption. Our Fresno facility now holds approximately 3,370 solar panels, enough to cover more than an entire football field! This also secures our energy availability for the future as we foresee the potential for energy scarcity in the coming years.
